A New Set of Mobile Changes Are Coming to OSRS

Jagex is bringing yet more mobile changes to Old School RuneScape, which could mean you’ll have an easier time gaining XP and GP while playing the game. With the recently released Polling Charter, Jagex has stated that they won’t poll changes to the user interface (UI) because it could affect the new players. When it comes to aesthetics, everyone has different tastes. With the announced mobile changes to UI, Jagex seems to go against some of the changes the player base didn’t want, even though they will bring very desired changes. One of them is the loot overlay, a tool that will allow you to see the OSRS GP value of the ground items and their names, so you don’t miss on any valuable loot when training your combat or your slayer on mobile and don’t miss out any gold because you didn’t see it. During the 2022 Winter Summit, Jagex presented two new features they plan to bring to the Steam and mobile client in 2023. Still, they have also released a blog post that details more of the changes you can expect to see soon, whether you are a mobile or a Steam player. In the Winter Summit, Jagex speaks about introducing a ground items overlay which will help you see the name and the value of items, and a loot tracker, which will help you track all of the items that you’ve dropped, so you know precisely how much OSRS gold you got and how.

Side Stones

The menus on the mobile client are currently on both sides of the screen. While this helps with two handing when engaging in various mechanically complex activities, there need to be more additions that Jagex has in mind for the feature. It will be nice to have the menus on one side of the screen for some activities. For example, for casting High Alchemy to train your Magic skill, it will be helpful to have both the spellbook and the inventory on the same side. However, for more complex activities such as bossing, having all the menus on one side will be detrimental as it would stress only one hand switching between prayer, spells, and inventory. Even though Jagex is aware of this from previous feedback from the players, they decided to go ahead with the change as the polling charter enables them to disregard the concerns of the veteran players who engage in more mechanically complex activities and add a hotkey for the inventory instead.

Chat Box

For the chat box, Jagex again disregards players’ opinions and is changing it to a new version that creates more clutter while stating it’s a cleaner version because you can somewhat minimize it. The player base has again previously spoken about not liking the proposed changes regarding the new chatbox interface, but Jagex is still forcing this change with the excuse that it looks cleaner and will create more room. The excellent aspect of the chat box is a button that will enable you to open your keyboard and prevent you from accidentally tapping to open the filter When it comes to the chatbox changes. Jagex is packing some great ones with some less desired ones and selling them as a bundle. With the chatbox revamping, Jagex also moved the logout button to the top left corner.

Hotkeys

The new mobile UI will also bring some hotkeys to help with the quality of life when performing certain activities. The hotkeys will be customizable and will allow you to enable the following modes: single tap mode, which can be incredibly useful when training Construction on mobile, and for some other activities, tap to drop, which is a must-have for cleaning your bank and skilling, for example, Barbarian Fishing, mining iron, woodcutting teak. Tile highlight is one of the hotkeys essential for a few bosses and something you might use even during quests such as The Underground Pass or while raiding. Entity interactions are another hotkey on the list, and they will help you, especially when questing. There’s also a walk here hotkey and an inventory hotkey that will release extra stress on a single hand that comes with the move of all the stone menus on one side of the screen.

Ground Items Overlay

Jagex has been speaking about this highly related feature for quite a while now, and it will finally reach the live version in early 2023. With the ground items overlay, you will have what you’d get on RuneLite with the ground item plug-in. You can customize threshold values for highlighting items of a specific value or hide items that don’t interest you. This will represent a massive quality of life improvement for Steam and mobile players because it will make it much easier to see and pick up your loot, so you don’t accidentally miss it or have to look for it intensely. This is especially useful for slayer tasks where you use your cannon and can kill targets, not on your screen, such as smoke devils.

Loot Tracker

To go even one step further when it comes to loot, money, and valuables, Jagex is bringing the loot tracker to mobile. This will be very similar to the loot tracker feature that players with OSRS accounts for sale on PC enjoy, where you can see exactly what a specific monster dropped. This way, you’ll know how much OSRS gold you made doing certain activities or killing various monsters.
